विश्‍वेश्‍वरी ने कमरे के अंदर आ कर, रुआँसी हो कर पूछा - 'रमा बेटी, कैसी है अब तुम्हारी तबीयत?' मुस्कराने की कोशिश करते हुए, उनकी तरफ देख कर रमा बोली - 'आज तो कुछ ठीक हूँ, ताई जी!' रमा को आज तीन महीने से मलेरिया का ज्वर आ रहा है। खाँसी ने उसके बदन की नस-नस ढीली कर दी है। गाँव के वैद्य जी उसका इलाज जी-तोड़ कोशिश से कर रहे हैं, पर सब व्यर्थ। उन बेचारों को क्या मालूम कि रमा केवल मलेरिया के ज्वर से ही आक्रांत नहीं है, उसे तो कोई और अग्नि ही जला कर खाक किए डाल रही है। विश्‍वेश्‍वरी को उसकी अव्यक्त अग्नि का कुछ-कुछ ज्ञान हो चला था। वे रमा को अपनी कन्या की तरह प्यार करती थीं, तभी उनकी आँखें रमा के हृदय को पढ़ने में समर्थ हो सकीं। और लोग तो उसे सही तौर पर न जान पाए। तभी मनमानी गलत अनुमान करने लगे, जिसे देख कर विश्‍वेश्‍वरी और भी व्यथित हो उठीं।
