Indira Gandhi was the only child of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru. She was associated with the war of independence since her childhood ,  even organising Vanar Sena or Monkey Army , to aid the Congress party during the Non Cooperation movement. She had studied at premium institutions in India including Viswa Bharti University, and had pursued an economics degree at Oxford University. She became affiliated with the Congress party in the year 1938.  In 1942,she married a journalist ,  Feroze Khan who had changed his surname to Feroze Gandhi. Later on , Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi had two sons ,Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. But Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi  were hostile towards  each other extremely in their relationship. During the year 1930, Indira Gandhi had lost her mother,  Kamala Nehru and subsequently, Indira Gandhi sometimes played as an attendant for Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru during  proceedings and went with him during his official tours. In 1959 , Indira Gandhi was selected as the President of the Congress party and she also became the member of the Rajya Sabha in the year 1964 . In  1964 , Lal Bahadur Shastri  also was selected as the Prime Minister of India after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru , and Lal Bahadur Shastri had named Indira Gandhi as minister of information and broadcasting in his administration. In January 1966, after the death of  Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi became the first female Prime Minister of India. But Indira Gandhi's  superiority came under her attack  from the right wing  of the party led  by the former finance department of India that is Morarji Desai . She had achieved her place in the 1967 elections to the Lok Sabha but the Congress party planned to achieve only a close vote of the positions and Indira Gandhi had to adjust Morarji Desai to work as the deputy Prime Minister of India. There had been a rise of pressure within the party and in 1969, Indira Gandhi was removed from the position by Morarji Desai and other members of the old guard. Unalarmed ,  Indira Gandhi was connected by a majority of party members and established a new movement around her called the New Congress party. In 1971 Lok Sabha elections ,  the New Congress group achieved a  landslide victory  over a federation of centre right parties. During the Indo Pakistan War ,she had sent Indian armies to help East Pakistan to gain  freedom from West Pakistan and made East Pakistan free from Pakistan; from that , East Pakistan formed a new country known as Bangladesh.  In 1980, Indira Gandhi was struggling with the harrasments to the integrity of politics in India. In June 1984, Indira Gandhi started Blue Star Operation , in which Indian army charged and expelled the terrorists from the complex. Most of the apartments in the complex got destroyed,  and more than 80 soldiers and hundreds of pilgrims lost their lives and majority of the soldiers,  belonged to Sikh religion. After five months Indira Gandhi was assassinated in the garden in New Delhi in a bombardment of bullets shot by her Sikh bodyguards for punishing her for attacking Amritsar. Indira Gandhi was succeeded by her son Rajiv Gandhi who served Congress till the year 1989.
