The first Indian female to achieve a gold medal in winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games, Geeta Phogat is a pioneer and a symbol among wrestlers in India. When she was born, her mother, Daya Kaur, was not satisfied because she was a girl. But her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, told her that girls can be as strong as boys. She also holds a special spot in the country’s wrestling history as the first Indian female wrestler to be eligible and fight at the Olympics, marking a turning point at the London 2012 Games. She was born on the 15th December 1988 in the Balali district in Haryana. She comes from a family identical to Indian wrestling. She was taught under the watchful eye of her father, as well as her coach, Mahavir Singh Phogat, an earlier wrestler she started with when she was young, who broke the societal barrier in a state where wrestling was considered only for males sports. Her younger sisters, Babita, Ritu, and Sangeeta, have all represented India at the international stage. Her cousin Vinesh Phogat had barely missed A gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In 2009, Geeta’s first International favourable result was declared in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Punjab. She increased quickly through the ranks medals in domestic and international competitions. Her attainments are as follows:-
a) Won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games that occurred in Jalandhar, Punjab
b) She achieved India’s first-ever gold medal in women's wrestling at the Commonwealth Games that occurred in New Delhi in 2010, defeating an Australian female wrestler, Emily Bensted
c) In April 2012, she won a gold medal in wrestling at the FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament that was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
d) In 2013, she ranked second by winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Johannesburg, South Africa.
e) In 2015, she ranked as a runner-up by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Commonwealth Games in Doha.
In 2017, she returned by winning A gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. In recent Times, Geeta Phogat has been preoccupied. She could not concentrate because of the megahit movie and then because of her bruises. She was not chosen for the Asian Games in 2018 because of the penalty issues. She said that her welcome back to wrestling has not been pleasant and declared that no outdoor game is easy if a person has taken a gap for several days. Every sports person has wins and losses. After an amazing beginning to her job, she is going through her slumps and her bruises. Since October 2016, Geeta Phogat has been working as a DSP in the Haryana police. Her wrestling story had inspired the film Dangal (2016, starring Fatima Sana Sheikh as Geeta Phogat, Zaira Wasim as young Geeta Phogat, Amir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, Sanya Malhotra as Babita Kumari, Suhani Bhatnagar as young Babita and Sakshi Tanwar as Daya Kaur. Along with that, Geeta Phogat had taken part in a TV show, Fear Factor, where she did very well, but was removed halfway.
