પાંત્રીસી વટાવી ચૂકેલાં નવિનભાઈએ ભારે અસમંજસ બાદ સ્ટેશને સમયસર પહોંચવા માટે આખરે ડેપોમાંનો શોર્ટકટ પકડ્યો. સૂર્ય ડૂબી ચૂક્યો હતો. ક્રમશઃ ફેલાઈ રહેલાં અંધકારમાં બંધ પહેલાં ડેપોમાંનો કાટમાળ વિકરાળ ભાસી રહ્યો હતો. કોઈક પાછળ આવી રહ્યાનાં આભાસથી તેમણે એક અછડતી નજર પાછળ નાંખી, અનાયાસે તેમની ઝડપમાં વધારો થયો. સ્હેજ આગળ જતાં એક બીજી માનવ-આકૃતિ તેમને આગળ દેખાઈ. નવિનભાઈ તેની સાવ નજીક પહોંચી ગયા ને આ દરમિયાન પાછળ આવતી માનવ-આકૃતિ પણ તેમની નજીક આવી પહોંચી. તેમનું હૃદય ધબકારા ચૂકી ગયું. અંધારું હવે વધારે ઘેરું થઈ ચૂક્યું હતું. આગળ ઊભેલી માનવ-આકૃતિના હાથમાં તેમણે એક વિચિત્ર ચળકતી વસ્તું જોઈ.
