ગામના કાચા રસ્તા પર વહેલી સવારના પગલાંઓનો અવાજ હજી બેસ્યો નહોતો. ઝાડ પરથી ટપકતી ઝાકળ માટીમાં સમાતી હતી, અને હવામાં ગાયના ગળાની ઘંટડી સાથે ચુલ્હાની આગનો હળવો ધુમાડો મિશ્રિત થતો હતો. સરસ્વતી નદીના કિનારે વસેલું અમારું ગામ—કાગડવાડ—એવું જાગતું હતું જાણે રોજના નિયમ મુજબ, પણ એ દિવસે કંઈક અલગ હતું. અલગ એટલા માટે કે મારી અંદર એક ખાલીપો હતો—એ સફરમાં કદાચ તું નથી. હું, મોહન, ગામના પ્રાથમિક શાળામાં માસ્ટર. મારી દુનિયા નાના બાળકોના હાસ્ય, બ્લેકબોર્ડ પરના અક્ષરો અને સાંજના પવન સાથે ગાયના વાછરડાંઓની ચીસોમાં સીમિત હતી. પણ આ દુનિયામાં એક નામ હતું—મીતાલી. એ નામ બોલતા જ હૃદયમાં તરણીઓ ઉછળતી. મીતાલી મારા
