रामलीला के मंचन की समाप्ति के पश्चात् राम का रूप धरा हुआ पात्र हाथों में धनुष बाण लिए मंच से उतरकर रावण के पुतला दहन के लिए धीरे धीरे आगे बढ़ रहा था । उसके पास आते ही लोग जय श्री राम के जयकारे लगाने लगे । भीड़ में खड़ी जानकी के हाथ भी श्रद्धावश जुड़ गए ।वह भी जयकारे लगाने ही वाली थी कि उसकी दृष्टि और समीप आ चुके पात्र राम पर पड़ी ।अब वह उसे स्पष्ट पहचान पा रही थी । पहचानते ही उसके होठों पर विद्रूप हँसी आ गई और उसकी आँखों के सामने उस दिन का दृश्य आ खड़ा हुआ ।
