રશ્મી એક મધ્યમવર્ગીય કુટુંબમાંથી આવે છે. તેના પિતા કં૫નીમાં કલાર્ક તરીકે ફરજ બજાવે છે અને તેની માતા હાઉસ વાઇફ છે. રશ્મી ભણવામાં બહુ હોશિયાર અને એકદમ સાદી-સીધી ને બસ ભણવામાં જ ધ્યાન આપે. કોલેજના પ્રોફેસરો પણ તેણીને આગળ ભણવા માટે પ્રોત્સાહન આપતા. ત્યાં બીજી બાજુ અનિકેત એક મોટા શ્રીમંત કુટુંબમાંથી આવતો હતો અને તેના માતા-પિતાનો એકમાત્ર સંતાન હતો. એટલે તેને ઉછેરવામાં કે સગવડ આપવામાં કોઇ કસર બાકી ન હતી. તેના પિતા શહેરના બહુ મોટા ઝવેરી હતા અને તેની માતા પણ સોસાયટીના પ્રમુખ તરીકે સારી એવી નામના મેળવી ચૂકયા હતા. અનિકેત પણ બહુ જ સારો દેખાતો હતો.
