The Silence Between Two People - 9

The Woman Who Learned to Walk Away

“Some people enter our lives to give us love. Others enter to teach us boundaries. The rarest ones do both without ever knowing they did.”

No one in the office expected what happened next.

Least of all, Kajal.

The day Sashi Sanghavi humiliated her so deeply, something inside her quietly came to an end.

She still came to work every morning.

She still completed every assignment with the same precision.

She still greeted people politely.

But the woman everyone knew…

was gone.

The cheerful Kajal who laughed with everyone disappeared.

The woman who believed that kindness alone could protect relationships no longer existed.

In her place stood someone different.

Calmer.

Sharper.

Professional.

She no longer invested herself in people who wore kindness only when it benefited them.

Every conversation became purposeful.

Every relationship found its boundary.

If someone asked her something, she answered.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Sometimes she wondered whether she was becoming too cold.

“Have I forgotten how to be human?” she asked herself.

But as months passed, another realization slowly settled into her heart.

Without intending to…

Aarav had taught her something priceless.

Boundaries.

Not through lectures.

Not through advice.

But through the way he carried himself.

Through the distance he knew how to maintain.

Through the quiet dignity with which he handled people.

The lesson became Kajal’s greatest strength.

No one could manipulate her emotions as easily anymore.

No one could casually disrespect her and expect silence.

Even Sashi Sanghavi changed.

One afternoon, while eating something, he gave Kajal an unclear instruction.

“Kajal… bring me…,” he mumbled between bites.

She looked at him calmly.

“I’m sorry, Sir,” she said politely. “I couldn’t understand what you wanted because you were eating.”

There was no sarcasm.

No fear.

Only professionalism.

For the first time, Sashi paused.

He repeated himself properly.

Perhaps he realised that old tactics no longer worked.

This was no longer the Kajal he once knew.

Six months later, Aarav returned from Australia.

As always, the office felt different the moment he entered.

The internationally respected jewellery entrepreneur, certified designer, gemologist, and passionate astrophotographer carried the same quiet elegance.

Yet something invisible had changed between them.

“Kem cho?” he asked gently.

Without looking at him, Kajal replied,

“Majama.”

Just two words.

Nothing else.

For the next three hours they worked in the same room.

Kajal never once looked towards him.

Not once.

Aarav tapped his pencil against the table.

He spoke louder than usual to Arjun.

“Arjun, hurry up. We have a lot of work.”

A few minutes later…

“I still have so much on my plate.”

His voice filled the room.

Kajal continued working without lifting her eyes.

Inside, it hurt.

Outside…

Nothing showed.

That evening she questioned herself.

The next morning she called Aarav.

“I wanted to say sorry,” she said quietly. “Yesterday I felt I was rude to you.”

There was a brief silence.

Then Aarav replied,

“No worries.”

“You were perfect.”

Relief washed over her.

Then she added,

“Unresolved things disturb me.”

For a moment, his breathing changed.

Almost instinctively, he repeated the same sentence he had spoken months earlier.

“This is an office.”

Once.

Then again.

And once more.

Kajal understood.

He wasn’t pushing her away.

He was reminding both of them where the line had to remain.

They belonged to two entirely different worlds.

She never questioned him again.

Some answers reveal themselves only through silence.

A month later Aarav returned once more.

He messaged her.

“Please take a driver’s token.”

“Okay,” Kajal replied.

An hour later another message arrived.

“No need now.”

Again she answered,

“Okay.”

A little later the office door opened.

Aarav stood there.

He looked towards Kajal, almost waiting for her eyes to meet his.

They didn’t.

That afternoon Kajal returned from the bank.

As she approached the building, she noticed Aarav standing outside.

Phone in his hand.

For a brief second she wondered whether she should stop.

Then another thought crossed her mind.

“If I go… he’ll probably smile and remind me again—‘This is an office.’ “

She simply walked past.

Without stopping.

Without looking.

Five minutes later Aarav entered the office.

The glass door closed harder than usual.

The sound echoed across the room.

For the first time…

He looked directly at Kajal.

There was frustration in his eyes.

Almost a silent question.

“Why did you ignore me?”

This time Kajal looked back.

With the same quiet intensity.

No anger.

No accusation.

Only truth.

Her eyes answered what her lips never did.

“You asked me to remain within my role. I respected that.”

Neither of them spoke.

The anger faded as quickly as it had appeared.

Only silence remained.

For a few long moments, neither looked away.

No promises were spoken.

No explanations were offered.

Yet something passed between them that words could never have carried.

Life has a strange way of bringing two people together just long enough to transform them.

Kajal had become stronger than she had ever imagined.

Her boundaries became her shield.

Her dignity became her voice.

Her kindness remained—but it was now reserved for those who deserved it.

As for Aarav…

Perhaps his own journey was still unfinished.

Perhaps some lessons can only be learned after teaching them to someone else.

And perhaps…

that is why some stories never truly end.

They simply pause.

Waiting for the next chapter.
