The People We Should Never Forget

Life is moving very fast today. We wake up with our mobile phones, spend most of our time with technology and go to bed thinking about the next day's responsibilities. We have many facilities that previous generations could only dream of. Yet, in this busy life, we sometimes forget the people who helped us reach where we are today.

They are the elderly people in our families.

Our parents, grandparents and other elderly members have lived through a completely different period. Their childhood was not like ours. They did not have smartphones, social media, online shopping or many of the modern facilities that we take for granted. Life was often difficult, but they learned to live with patience and courage.

Many of them worked hard throughout their lives for their families. They made sacrifices without talking much about them. They gave their children education, supported them during difficult times and slowly watched their children build their own lives.

Today, when they become old, their needs are often very simple.

They may want someone to sit beside them.

They may want someone to listen to an old story.

They may want to talk about their childhood.

Sometimes they simply want to know that they are still important to their family.

Unfortunately, we often do not have enough time for them.

Children are busy with their studies. Young people are busy with their jobs. Parents are busy with household responsibilities. Everyone has something to do. Even when the whole family is sitting in the same room, people may be looking at different screens instead of talking to each other.

An elderly person may be sitting quietly in the same house, waiting for someone to ask, “How are you?”

That simple question can mean a lot.

We should understand that old age is not a weakness. It is a stage of life that every person hopes to reach. The person who is old today was once young, energetic and full of dreams. He or she also had responsibilities, ambitions, friendships and struggles.

The wrinkles on an elderly person's face tell a story.

The grey hair tells another story.

The hands that have become weak today may once have worked for many years to build a family.

Therefore, we should not measure an elderly person only by what he or she can do today. We should also remember what that person has done throughout life.

There is another reason why we should spend time with elderly people. They are living memories of our families.

A grandfather may remember how a village looked fifty years ago. A grandmother may remember traditional recipes that are slowly disappearing. A parent may remember the difficulties faced by the family during earlier years. These memories are not always found in books.

When an elderly person tells us a story from the past, we are not simply listening to a story. We are listening to a small part of our own history.

Our children should also have opportunities to spend time with grandparents and elderly relatives. Technology can give them information, but personal experience can teach them many things that cannot be learned from a screen.

They can learn patience.

They can learn respect.

They can learn the value of hard work.

They can learn how families survived difficult periods.

Most importantly, they can learn the meaning of human relationships.

Caring for elderly people does not always require expensive arrangements. Sometimes a phone call is enough. Sometimes sitting beside them for ten minutes is enough. Sometimes taking them outside for a short walk can make their day happier.

A small act of kindness can have a very big meaning in someone's life.

We should also remember that elderly people may sometimes repeat the same stories. They may ask the same questions. They may need help with things that were once very easy for them.

Instead of becoming impatient, we can try to understand them.

They have been patient with us for many years.

When we were children, we asked the same questions again and again. We needed help with almost everything. They did not consider us a burden. They cared for us because we were their children or grandchildren.

Now the situation has changed.

Perhaps it is our turn to care for them.

A society cannot be truly developed only because it has modern buildings, better roads and advanced technology. A society also becomes better when people care about one another.

The way we treat elderly people says something about the values of our families and communities.

We should not wait for a special day to show our love and respect.

We do not need a celebration.

We do not need an expensive gift.

A few kind words can be enough.

A cup of tea together can be enough.

A phone call can be enough.

A hand held with affection can be enough.

One day, the elderly people around us may no longer be there. Their rooms may become silent. Their chairs may remain empty. Their familiar voice may become only a memory.

When that day comes, we may wish that we had spent a little more time with them.

So let us not wait for that day.

If there is an elderly person in our home, let us talk to them today.

Let us listen to their stories.

Let us ask about their health.

Let us make them feel that they still have an important place in our lives.

Because people may forget many things that we give them, but they rarely forget how we made them feel.

The elderly are not simply people from our past.

They are a part of who we are.

And they are people we should never forget.
