The Angel Inside - 55 Denial

Jay's POV

"You need to accept the fact that your wife is no more."

While I stayed silent, one psychiatrist sitting in front of me tried all the ways to make me believe that Amy was dead. I was done with everyone treating me like a damn psychotic patient who had made a run from the asylum and was on a killing spree. They were trying to treat my illness, even though I was a doctor myself.

People were hell-bent on bringing me out of my room and the house that I lived in after the wedding. They called it 'moving on', whereas I wanted to stay in there and wait for her. She promised me to be back but no one was ready to believe me.

Being fed up with my tantrums, Mr. Ren had reached my house's doorstep in the name of talking to me like a friend, which was of course a lie because he was sent by my parents and I wanted nothing more than to be left alone.

I stood up from my seat, being done with the bullshit of a game that my life had been playing with me. I walked out of my house while Dr. Ren, who was surprised by my actions, didn't stop me. Maybe he had understood that I wanted to be alone.

My head flashed with memories while all I wanted was to shun it away.

A month passed and the first thing I saw after waking up from the hospital bed was my parents, who stood beside me, worried.

They must have been informed. My gaze shifted to Eric, who was sitting on the couch. His eyes screamed at me not to tell them anything. Mom had been caressing my head, as she hugged me while I lay still on the bed.

Mom: You are safe.

I knew she had been crying rivers, her eyes had turned puffy. Slowly raising my hand, I pat her back to comfort her.

Mom: You should rest, baby; I'll bring some fruits.

With that, she left before glancing at Dad and me for the last time.

Dad: I don't understand how you even got into an accident.

His words halted as he huffed a breath.

Dad: If Eric hadn't saved you, it would have been too late. I don't want to stress you out, Rest for now, we'll talk later.

Dad also left the room, leaving me and Eric behind.

What did Eric even say to them? My gaze peered at him, parting my lips I could feel my mouth dry. The only word I could mumble was Amy.

Eric sighed, looking away, as he slowly shook his head.

Eric: You were in a coma for a week. I had to inform them that you got into an accident.

I slowly rose from the bed, sitting straight, even though I barely had any energy.

I looked at him in the eye.

Jay: I asked about something, where is she?

He looked hesitant.

Eric: Even though the plan was clear, Edward and Amy didn't tell us about the risks it held. They couldn't make it. That building...I went there... I only found this...

His hand clutched a gun. It was Amy's. He stood up from the couch, pushing the gun onto the table beside my bed. The metal had signs of burning. My breath hitched as my trembling hands took hold of the metal.

My eyes burned with tears that had gathered in the corners of my eyes. Her name, 'Ash' was carved on it.

Jay: You are lying.

My chapped lips pursed into a thin line, trying to control my sobs that had an urge to escape.

This couldn't happen. Everything was a lie.

LIE.
FALSE.
HOAX.

I repeated it in my head.

She is strong.

She promised me.

Didn't she?

She promised me she'd be back alive.

I mumbled again and again, whereas Eric held me, trying to console me and wanting me to stand awake from my disrupted senses.

Eric: Jay, you need to believe. She's no more.

He looked at me, pained.

I couldn't think straight, I pushed Eric away, making him stumble to the couch behind him.

Jay: I said no! She said she'd be back!

I screamed at him. Not caring, I pulled out the needles that were pierced in my veins for glucose, standing up from the bed. I walked out of the door, not caring if I was in a hospital uniform, walking away through the corridors like a maniac.

I made a run to my cabin, where Amy always waited for me. Everyday. Pushing the door open, I looked around to find any traces of her. My heart hurt at the thought of her not being there.

I heard the door behind me open. Only to find Max, Noah, and Emma barging in.
Max dashed forward but my hand gestured for him to stop where he was.

Max: Connor, you need rest.

Jay: Where is she? Where is Amy?

I yelled, looking at them in their eyes, which held nothing but pity.

Pity.

On me.

Emma's gaze held a stern intent, her fingers pushing the button of the remote to switch the TV on. Changing through channels as she finally stopped on one.

A burned car turned upside down in the middle of nowhere. The voice from the device erupted as the reporter started to speak.

"This burned car behind belongs to the renowned CEO of ACE, none other than Ms. Ash, who had been returning from a business trip when her car seemingly crashed into the divider, causing an accident. According to the said investigators, this incident took place at midnight, the reason being the immense speed that led the car to flip after colliding with the divider. It became difficult due to the sudden impact but her vehicle had caught fire, which made it impossible for her to escape and led to her death. The dead body has the signs of 3rd-degree burns-"

Emma switched off the TV, looking back at me. She held me by my shoulders.

Emma: Jay, she's gone. Accept it.

It was a lie. This car accident was a lie.

Jay: No. It's a lie.

I snarled.

Emma: It's not!

Jay: Shut up!

Emma was taken off guard, her expression held shock because, for the first time, I had raised my voice like never before. She took a step back.

Noah: Jay-

Jay: I said shut up!

He flinched back at my yell.

Jay: You all are lying!

The more they attempted to calm me down, the more I felt triggered. I destroyed everything that came into my sight. My hands were working on their own, hitting and throwing everything, crashing to the ground and against the wall. Until I felt a needle piercing the skin on my neck, making me lose consciousness.

The next day was Amy's funeral, her body wasn't revealed. It was just too disturbing to see it. They had already trapped the so-called corpse in the coffin as it was placed beside the dug ground where it was to be buried.

Eric had told me that her death by car accident was staged. Because he wanted Amy to have her respect and position in society and not let people see her as a criminal.

He had bought an abandoned, identical corpse that matched Amy's figure and height and made it look like an accident.
According to him, that blast in the building had already turned their bodies into ashes, with nothing left to perform her last rites or Edward's.

The funeral yard fell crowded, and people clad in their black colourless outfits visited. The ones who didn't even like Amy's face were standing near her coffin. Which included her stepmother, father, and Martha. But the people who personally cared and admired Amy were more than the ones who despied.

Alex, Charlie, and my mom couldn't stop crying. Though Amy had difficulties spending time with Mom, she surely left a soft spot in her heart. Dad had been consoling her as he continued to pat her back to stop her hiccups and sobs while my sister comforted Alex, holding onto his arm in her hands.

People who once trolled and scrutinized her position as a woman in business were now shedding tears of sorrow next to her grave.

Drama.

The word beamed in my head.

With shit-acting skills.

The next level was news channels, which pointed to her character and her motives in the past. They were now putting up tributes, adding bulletins of her struggle and achievements, praising the dollars of donations that she had made across orphanages and being a major investor in a hospital that focused on child health.

The media went to extreme levels from digging into her past to the present which revealed me as her husband which was nothing new. But Mr. Park as her father was another case. People were shocked and had questions bubbling up now and then but Mr. Park had straight away ignored it.

If that wasn't enough to gain TRP, people started putting up conspiracy theories and how her car accident was planned by a mastermind.

Amy had become a hero in everyone's eyes. As a businesswoman, she also attended interviews, and podcasts, and was on a famous magazine's cover that featured businessmen. And the fact that she didn't take any support from her father or my family or use our names in any way, had brought change in hearts.

She had gained the respect her late mother never received. Her grave wasn't dug in some abandoned space but in an actual cemetery.

People had started to drop their flowers on this stranger's coffin one by one. The first one was the woman I despised the most, Mrs. Park. She wept so fakely that I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I wanted to strangulate her to death.

I remembered my promise—I was going to make that woman pay for her sins. But being the so-called mother she was, she got an opportunity while Mr. Park didn't blink, he stood beside her coffin and didn't move away.

No one could comprehend his expressions, he was blank, but his eyes showed grief, pain, sorrow, and regret. Next were Mom and Dad and later it was my turn.

I stood in my place. I didn't move. People were staring at me like I had grown two heads. The flowers in my hands were crumbled into petals. The thorns stung my skin, and the blood oozed, dripping to the ground but I didn't care.

I despised this funeral. A funeral where some stranger held Amy's name, died as my wife and took her place to be called by my last name. I couldn't stand it. The fact that everyone believed Amy was dead irritated me.

Because Amy wasn't dead.

She promised me she'd be back.

And I would stick to her promise, no matter if people called me crazy.

If I was crazy, so be it.

Eric, Mateo, and Carlos soon covered up and handled the situation by visiting her coffin and placing the flowers. By the time everyone had a visit, Mr.Park still hadn't moved from his place. He settled to the ground, his hand caressing the coffin as if it were her daughter. Alex soon had to force him to get up and let the coffin be buried.

Human beings are such weird species, they tend to ignore their loved ones, speak profanities, be bad people, and despise everyone and everything just to regret it on the day of death and realise that the time they thought, they could make it up was gone.

Death is a funny thing. You make yourself believe that you don't fear it but you still do. You fear that your desires will be left unattended.

Till the time the coffin was finally buried, the tombstone was placed above it, a white marble slab that was carved with designs and a name painted in gold, "Mrs. Amy Conor.". Her photograph was placed near the slab and after that, people left one by one.

The last ones who were left were me and Mr.Park. He once again settled himself beside her grave and wasn't ready to leave.

Mom and Dad gave me a worried look, they thought I was having a trauma or the so-called psychological term PTSD. Since I wasn't ready to believe the fact that Amy was gone.

I stood beside Mr. Park, who didn't react to my presence. We were both left alone in the cemetery. I stood holding an umbrella above us as it soon started to rain.

I didn't revealed the fact to him. The coffin that he had been caring off as if it was his daughter laying in when she actually wasn't there but some abandoned body from the mortuary. I wanted Amy to confront him by herself. So I didn't meddled in revealing things to him. Just stood by his side and let him weep.

Sadistic.

Wasn't I?

This month had passed, but I was still adamant about denying everyone and their talks.

1 month, 2 days.

1 month, 1 week.

1 month, 3 weeks.

2 months.

2 months and 2 weeks.

Why was it taking so long for her to return?

I remembered the last time, I had hurt her badly, I couldn't even explain myself and apologise to her. I blamed her for everything when it was fated. She wasn't at fault.

Was she still sulking at it?

Was she angry at me?

But she will forgive me, right?

As the days passed, my patience had been running thin. People looked at me with sympathy and pity. They even decided to admit me to some mental hospital.

Why couldn't they believe me?

It has been exactly 4 months now since Mom blackmailed me to stay with her in my previous home.

When I asked to go back to the hospital and continue my practice as a surgeon, she said I needed to rest for a while. It puzzled me but I didn't question further.

The moment I entered my room, I found many things had changed. My gaze locked on the study table, all my tools had disappeared. I checked the drawers. My files and books were there but my favourite ink pen was missing. I looked at the paintings that Mom had framed, and a memory stuck with me, they were my paintings, Mom found me too talented with art. My hands caressed the paintings but the glass frame was missing.

The clocks had disappeared.

I realized every sharp object in the room, my medicines, syringes...

Everything was missing.

When I analyzed my room, I heard a soft knock on the door, I didn't have to look to know who it was.

Of course, Mom. I turned around to face her. She looked nervous, her fingers fidgeting. She looked at me as if I were some ticking time bomb.

Mom: Some lawyers want to meet you. Would you come down to meet them?

I slowly nodded leaving my scrutinizing gaze away from my room.

Descending the stairs, I found 2 people in formal attire. They looked quite hesitant to even talk to me. They glanced at Mom and Dad and then back at me.

As I took a seat on the couch, both of them introduced themselves. They were Amy's lawyers. With a short briefing of their past with Amy, they finally came to the point. They gave me 2 documents. Those were the original papers of her properties.

One was 'Divas' and the other was some huge chunk of land. I looked at them questionably.

"Ms. Amy had made a will, according to her will, 'Divas' and the other property would be handed to you."

Jay: what do you mean?

" She had made a will, a few months ago...if she was no more in future.."

The lawyer's words trailed off, he looked nervous about how I would react to them.

Jay: A few months ago...

My words wobbled, my hands trembling.
She already knew she was not going to return.

She knew.

Her end.

She knew all this time, yet she drew me close to her, only to betray and abandon me one day!

She held me as if she was gonna last forever.

She stayed with me all this time, knowing that she was going to die.

She divorced me; she hurt me intentionally.

All this time, she planned to push me away.

While I, as an idiot, couldn't see any of it coming.

Surely love makes people blind.

But after hurt and betrayal, the feeling of rage settled into my core.

She was a traitor.

A betrayer.

She broke her promise.

She broke me.

I hated this feeling.

I hated her.
