Pages From My Heart - 4

IV

For a year, everything felt perfect.

Even with the distance, we tried to stay close — calls and texts.
It wasn’t always easy, but I thought we could handle it.

But over time, I started putting in less effort.
Not because I didn’t care,
but because life got busy, and I thought he would always be there.

I noticed subtle changes in him.
He became quieter on calls, less excited to talk,
and sometimes I felt him drifting —
his attention somewhere else, his heart slowly pulled away.

Then I found out…
he liked someone else.

That one sentence hit me like a storm.
All the memories, all the closeness, suddenly felt fragile.
I tried to understand, tried to convince myself it wasn’t true…
but deep down, I knew.

We talked one last time.
I don't think this is working anymore.
I just stayed silent, letting reality sink in.

And that was it.
After a year of love, laughter, and promises,
long distance and new feelings broke us apart.

I walked away with a heavy heart,
but also with the bitter truth:
sometimes love isn’t enough when hearts start drifting in different directions.

The first six months after we broke up were… the hardest.
Everywhere I looked, I saw memories of him.
A song , a message notification that reminded me of him,
even places we had been together — everything brought a rush of feelings I couldn’t control.

I kept thinking about what went wrong,
replaying every moment in my head,
wondering if I could have done more, cared more, tried harder.

Some days I felt empty.
Other days I felt angry at him… at myself… at the world.
Even when I was busy with school or friends,
a small thought about him could make my chest tighten.

I tried to distract myself, but nothing really worked.
Sleep was hard. Eating was hard.
And the nights…
the nights were the worst.
That’s when the memories came flooding back the most —
our talks, our laughs, the way he smiled at me.

I wanted to text him, just once,
to feel that closeness again,
but I knew it wouldn’t help.
It would only make letting go even harder.

I cried more than I wanted to admit,
but slowly…
painfully…

After months of heartbreak, I wasn’t ready to completely let go.
Not because I wanted him back…
but because a part of me still missed him.

So, I created a fake account.
Just to see him…
just to know he was okay.
I told myself it was harmless — nothing more than a quiet way to watch him from afar.

For months, I would scroll through his life.
Sometimes happy.
Sometimes jealous.
Sometimes my heart ached seeing him smile with someone else.

And then… it happened.

A message popped up on my fake account.
From his account.

“Ananya… it’s you, isn’t it?”

I froze.
My hands went cold.
My heart skipped a beat — maybe a hundred.
How did he know?
Why now?

I didn’t reply immediately.
Part of me wanted to run, hide, pretend it wasn’t me.
But another part… a part that never really let him go,
wanted to answer.

I could feel my fingers trembling over the keyboard.
Every memory of us, every laugh, every tear, every moment came rushing back.
And just like that, everything I had tried to move past
was suddenly alive again.

After he messaged me, we started talking again.
At first, it was just small messages… casual, careful.
But slowly, the walls between us began to crumble.

He apologized.
Not just a simple “I’m sorry”…
he really apologized.
He said he regretted leaving me,
and that he missed what we had more than he had realized back then.

Hearing him say that brought a rush of emotions I hadn’t felt in months —
relief, happiness, but also that familiar ache of old pain.

We talked for days.
Laughing, remembering, sometimes crying.
It felt like a part of me that had been frozen was slowly thawing.
The connection we had… it was still there.

Then, one night, when everything felt calm and right,
I finally said it.
The words had been sitting inside me for so long:

“Let’s patch up. I missed you.”

He didn’t say anything for a moment.
Then I felt my phone buzz…
and there it was, simple, heartfelt, just like him.

And he said yes, we can.

And in that moment,
I knew we were beginning again.
Not perfect. Not easy.
But real.
Do you think this is a happy ending or something else.
Is there going to be a twist in the story ?
