At some point, growth becomes necessary, not optional.
"Storage almost full."
It's funny how we instantly pay attention when this notification appears on our phones.
Without thinking twice, we start cleaning.
Delete old screenshots.
Remove apps we never use.
Clear the cache.
Update the software.
Make space for something better.
Because we know one simple truth: if we don't update our phones, they slowly stop working the way they should. They become slower, heavier, and frustrating to use.
And one day, it struck me...
Life works exactly the same way.
Many of us keep carrying things that have already expired.
Old hurts that still occupy space in our hearts.
Old disappointments that continue to shape our decisions.
Old fears that stop us from trying again.
Old beliefs that no longer fit the person we have become.
Then we wonder why everything feels so heavy.
A man I know refused to update his phone for years. Every few days, he would complain.
"It hangs."
"Nothing works smoothly."
"The battery drains too fast."
One day, his friend smiled and said,
"You're expecting new performance from an old system."
That simple sentence stayed with me.
Because don't we all do the same?
We want better relationships.
Better peace.
Better confidence.
Better opportunities.
A happier life.
Yet we expect all of it while holding on to the same thinking, the same habits, and the same reactions that have been keeping us stuck for years.
Life keeps changing.
People change.
Situations change.
Even our dreams change.
But sometimes we keep living as if nothing inside us needs to.
Life quietly keeps asking us,
Update... or stay stuck.
The truth is, updates are rarely comfortable.
They take time.
Sometimes the screen goes blank before the new version appears.
Sometimes things feel uncertain for a while.
Real life is no different.
Updating ourselves often means letting go of what no longer belongs in our lives.
Old grudges.
Old excuses.
Old comparisons.
Old fears.
Old versions of "This is just how I am."
And letting go is never easy.
But every time we release something that no longer serves us, we make space for something healthier.
A calmer mind.
A kinder heart.
A stronger version of ourselves.
When I looked back, I realised how many silent updates had already happened within me without my even noticing.
Things that once kept me awake at night don't bother me anymore.
People whose opinions once mattered so much no longer control my happiness.
Dreams I chased desperately have quietly been replaced by things that bring me real peace.
And fears that once looked like mountains now feel like tiny stones on the road.
That's what growth really looks like.
It isn't always loud.
It doesn't always come with big achievements or dramatic life changes.
Sometimes it's simply reacting differently to the same situation.
Choosing peace over proving a point.
Choosing understanding over anger.
Choosing to move forward instead of carrying yesterday everywhere you go.
Those are the updates that truly change a life.
Maybe life gives us only two choices.
We can keep repeating the same patterns, expecting different results.
Or we can accept that every new chapter of life asks for a newer version of ourselves.
Because staying the same forever is also a choice.
And often, the biggest thing standing between us and the life we want isn't the world around us—it's the version of ourselves we're still holding on to.
Lesson:
Don't expect a better life while running on an outdated version of yourself. Growth begins the moment you give yourself permission to update.
