The Corcodile Splash

The summer holidays had just begun, and Aarav and his group of friends were bubbling with excitement. After weeks of planning, they had finally decided to visit the famous Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Center, popularly known as Katraj Snake Park. For children who loved adventure, animals, and outdoor trips, it seemed like the perfect destination.

The group consisted of Aarav, Rohan, Vivaan, Mehul, and Kabir, along with two mothers who had agreed to accompany them. The boys had spent days imagining giant pythons, hissing cobras, lazy crocodiles, and colourful birds. They packed backpacks with snacks, water bottles, cameras, notebooks, and caps, ready for what they believed would be the most thrilling day of their summer vacation.

Early in the morning, the group boarded a bus to Pune. The journey itself was filled with laughter and excitement. The boys argued about which snake was the most dangerous, shared stories they had read about jungles and reptiles, and kept peeping out of the windows as the city slowly came alive.

After nearly two hours of travelling, they finally reached the snake park. The giant entrance gate, decorated with pictures of reptiles and wildlife, instantly filled them with enthusiasm. However, as they rushed towards the ticket counter, their excitement came crashing down. A large notice board announced that the snake park section was temporarily closed for maintenance work.

For a few moments, silence spread across the group. The boys stared at the board in disbelief. Aarav sighed deeply while Kabir dramatically declared, “This is the worst day ever!” The mothers tried to comfort the disappointed children, but everyone felt gloomy after travelling such a long distance.

Just then, Rohan remembered that his house was located very close to the park. With a bright smile, he suggested, “Why don’t we stay at my place tonight and visit again tomorrow?” The idea instantly lifted everyone’s spirits. Rohan’s mother called home, and his family warmly welcomed the unexpected guests.

As evening approached, the children settled into Rohan’s cosy house. What began as disappointment soon transformed into an unforgettable sleepover adventure. The boys played board games, shared ghost stories, watched wildlife documentaries, and laughed endlessly. Rohan’s grandmother served hot pakoras and chilled lemonade, which everyone devoured hungrily.

Later that night, while sitting on the terrace under the sparkling sky, the boys spoke about their dreams and ambitions. Aarav confessed that he wanted to become a wildlife photographer someday. Vivaan wished to travel through dense forests and study rare animals. Their conversation made the night feel magical and meaningful.

The next morning began with the mouthwatering aroma of freshly prepared pav bhaji floating through the house. Rohan’s mother had lovingly cooked a grand breakfast for everyone. The buttery pav, spicy bhaji, chopped onions, and squeeze of lemon made the meal absolutely irresistible. The boys ate heartily, joking and teasing one another while excitement for the day ahead returned stronger than ever.

Soon, the group reached the snake park once again. This time, the gates were open. The children rushed inside with sparkling eyes and boundless enthusiasm. The park was lush and vibrant, filled with towering trees, chirping birds, and pathways lined with colourful flowers. Everywhere they looked, there was something fascinating to observe.

Their first stop was the reptile section. Behind thick glass enclosures lay an astonishing variety of snakes. Some were coiled silently like sleeping ropes, while others slithered gracefully across rocks and branches. The guide explained the unique features of cobras, vipers, pythons, and rat snakes. Aarav listened attentively, completely mesmerised by the majestic reptiles.

The giant Indian Rock Python became everyone’s favourite. It lay curled lazily inside its enclosure, appearing both terrifying and magnificent at the same time. Kabir nervously whispered, “Imagine seeing that in your bedroom!” causing the entire group to burst into laughter.

As they moved further, they came across turtles basking in the sunlight, colourful parrots fluttering noisily in cages, and monkeys swinging energetically from tree branches. Every corner of the park seemed alive with movement and sound.

Finally, they reached the crocodile enclosure — the section that would soon become unforgettable.

A huge crocodile lay motionless near the water, its rough, scaly body blending almost perfectly with the muddy surroundings. It looked so still that it appeared lifeless. One of the boys’ mothers, fascinated by the creature, leaned slightly forward and said jokingly, “I wonder if it’s even real!”

Before anyone could stop her, she scooped a tiny amount of water with her hand and lightly sprinkled it towards the crocodile.

What happened next startled everyone.

Within seconds, the crocodile’s powerful tail thrashed violently against the ground. Its enormous jaws snapped open, revealing rows of sharp, glistening teeth. The sudden movement sent waves through the water and caused the children to jump back in terror.

Aarav nearly dropped his camera, while Mehul screamed loudly enough to attract attention from nearby visitors.

Almost immediately, two park guards hurried towards them with stern expressions. One of them firmly instructed the group not to disturb the animals under any circumstances. The atmosphere suddenly became tense and uncomfortable.

The boys lowered their heads guiltily while the mother apologised repeatedly for her impulsive action. For a frightening moment, the group feared they might be asked to leave the park altogether.

The guards explained that wild animals, especially crocodiles, could react unpredictably when disturbed. Even a playful action could stress or provoke them. The children listened carefully, realising the seriousness of the situation.

After several sincere apologies and repeated assurances that such behaviour would never happen again, the guards finally softened. One of them smiled faintly and said, “You may continue your visit, but remember — respecting wildlife is the first rule of every zoo and sanctuary.”

Relief spread across the group like cool rain after a storm.

The remainder of the day passed peacefully. Chastened by the incident, the children became more observant and respectful. They attended a fascinating wildlife awareness session where they learned about snake rescue operations, forest conservation, and the importance of protecting endangered species.

Aarav was deeply inspired by the stories shared by wildlife rescuers. He realised that animals were not creatures to be feared or teased, but living beings deserving care and respect.

Before leaving, the friends sat together in the garden area near a fountain, enjoying ice creams and discussing the day’s dramatic adventure. Though the crocodile incident had frightened them, it had also become the most unforgettable part of the trip.

As the golden evening sunlight spread across the park, the group prepared to leave. The boys clicked one final photograph together near the entrance gate, smiling widely despite their tiring day.

During the journey back home, the bus was much quieter than before. The children gazed thoughtfully out of the windows, replaying the memories in their minds — the disappointment of the closed park, the joyful sleepover at Rohan’s house, the delicious pav bhaji breakfast, the magnificent snakes, and of course, the terrifying splash adventure with the crocodile.

For Aarav and his friends, the trip had become much more than a simple excursion. It had turned into an unforgettable lesson about friendship, adventure, responsibility, and respect for nature.

Years later, whenever the friends met, someone would inevitably laugh and say, “Remember the crocodile at Katraj Snake Park?” And instantly, the entire group would burst into laughter, reliving the wildest adventure of their childhood.
