Curious Enough to Die

Inspired by True Events

CHAPTER ONE: THE OFFER

Sabelo Dlamini was twenty-five years old when desperation became more convincing than caution.

For nearly two years he had searched for work. Every morning he woke before sunrise, ironed the same fading shirt, and carried copies of his CV from one business to another. Every answer was the same.

"We'll call you."

No one ever did.

One afternoon his phone rang. The voice on the other end belonged to an old high school classmate.

"Where are you these days, Sabelo?"

"Still looking for work."

"I've got something better than a job."

The words sounded like an answered prayer.

His former classmates told him they had found work in South Africa. They said there was plenty of money to be made. No interviews. No qualifications. Just hard work and quick cash.

They laughed as they described the life.

"We're making more money in a week than people make in months back home. Come join us."

Sabelo hesitated.

"Is it legal?"

There was a brief silence.

"It's just mining," one of them replied. "Nothing to worry about."

That was all he needed to hear.

He borrowed money for transport, packed a small bag with two changes of clothes, and left home believing he was finally chasing his future.

The journey took him across the border and deeper into South Africa than he had ever imagined.

The paved roads disappeared.

The taxis became pickups.

The pickups became footpaths.

Soon the houses were gone.

Trees swallowed the road.

Hours later they stopped at the edge of a vast forest.

Sabelo frowned.

"Where's the mine?"

One of the men smiled.

"You'll see."

They walked for nearly an hour through thick bush before the smell reached him—smoke, sweat, diesel, alcohol, and mud.

Then he saw them.

Hundreds of plastic tents stretched beneath the trees.

Generators roared.

Men carried sacks of rock on their backs.

Women stood outside makeshift taverns calling customers.

Music blasted from battered speakers while armed men watched everyone who entered.

This wasn't a mining company.

This was a hidden town built on illegal gold.

Sabelo turned to his classmates.

"This isn't what you told me."

One of them avoided his eyes.

Another simply said,

"It's too late to go back now."

For the first time since leaving home, Sabelo realized he hadn't come looking for a job.

He had walked into a world that had its own laws, its own rulers, and its own price for anyone who wanted to leave.
